It is the second most important and prestigious tournament in South America. The competition is played in knockout rounds where 32 clubs from Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela, Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay enters in the 1st Stage to play two-legged tie matches. 8 clubs from both Brazil and Argentina joins the competition in the 2nd Stage and the previous year winner joins only in the Round-of-16. The winner of the Copa Sudamericana becomes eligible to play in the Recopa Sudamericana against the Copa Libertadores champion. Argentine club Boca Juniors is the most successful club in the cup history, having won the tournament 2 times. River Plate (ARG), Lanús (ARG), Independiente (ARG), Arsenal (ARG), San Lorenzo (ARG), São Paulo (BRA), Internacional (BRA), Universidad de Chile (CHI), LDU (ECU), Pachuca (MEX) and Cienciano (PER) have 1 title each.
