Developing a stage design often suffers from difficulties when trying to visualise the result before the actual build.
In German speaking countries the so called "Bauprobe" (set rehearsal) is there to minimise wrong planning by giving a first impression of a mockup stage.
But even then during the design process virtual models and computer aded design attempts can help.
First Stage http://first-stage.eu is aiming to support stage designers and scenographers in their process. It's a virtual reality solution developed by a number of European institutions.
There is also an almost free possibility to pre-visualise your spacial show designs using blender and some cheap google cardboard like VR-goggles
